The Leventis Foundation has trained over 25,000 youths across the country in modern and sustainable agricultural practices.

The Executive Director of the organisation, Dr. Hope Usieta, disclosed this recently at the Foundation’s 30th anniversary in Abuja.

He also announced that the Foundation, in its 30 years of existence, expended about N1 billion to train and assist farmers in agribusiness.

He said: “The foundation is dedicated to training youths and farmers in modern agricultural practices. In our training schools, we train farmers through the different aspect of agriculture. We admit the farmers who stay on campus for a year.

”We teach them both crop and livestock farming, value addition skills, and how to use farm machinery. We have trained more than 25,000 youth through our one-year regular programme and short courses. Each school has capacity to admit 100 to 150 trainee per year and on average we graduate 700 youths.”

He added that as part of the activities to mark the anniversary, some youths with great ideas would be offered N2 million each to boost their business in agriculture.

According to him, this will enable them move from a small scale to a large-scale production.

He further disclosed that the Foundation is expanding and has built a new agricultural management institute in Edo State, to produce managers, who would be able to function in large-scale farming.

”We did a groundbreaking ceremony of the new institute in Edo. Agric is expanding. We noticed that managers are not functioning very well in large-scale farming. We are looking to bridge that gap by establishing the agricultural management institute in Edo State,” he said.
