Foundation organises capacity building on dyslexia

In furtherance of its mission to create awareness, provide training, remediation and support to persons struggling with dyslexia, the Dyslexia Foundation is organizing an expanded Teachers’ Training Programme. The move is aimed at improving the capacity of teachers to provide dyslexia intervention in the country.
  
According to Chairman of the foundation’s board of trustee, Ben Arikpo, the move is aimed at improving teachers’ capacity for effective dyslexia identification, support and remediation in Nigeria. 

He added: “This training became a necessary annual event after a 2017 survey by the Foundation on teachers’ dyslexia awareness and intervention preparedness, revealed that over 75 per cent of teachers in Nigeria did not know the correct signs and symptoms of dyslexia, and have no knowledge of the techniques for supporting dyslexic children in their classrooms.

“It is instructive to note that dyslexia is the most common of all learning disabilities worldwide. It is of neurological origin and affects an estimated 17% of Nigeria’s population.”

He pointed out that through the training, the foundation aims to engender positive life outcomes for the millions of persons with dyslexia in-country by equipping teachers and administrators from public and private educational institutions with the necessary tools and skills for professional and effective dyslexia identification, remediation and support in Nigeria.

The three-day training was held in Lagos, Abuja, Kano and Port Harcourt respectively. 

Among those that attended were teachers, school management board members, Special Needs Education (SEN), and SENCO Practitioners, School Counsellors, Career Coaches, Private School Owners, Staff of the Special Education Units and Departments of the Ministry of Education, Home School Teachers, Parents and other interested participants.
