The Director-General, Institute of National Transformation (INT), Prof. Vincent Anigbogu, has said building integrity and reputation for leadership was crucial for a nation’s transformation.

According to him, when one maintains the highest standard regardless of criticism, then such a person is destined for greatness.

Anigbogu said this during the seventh National Leadership Dialogue Series, organised by the Nigerian Prize for Leadership (NPL), where he spoke on “Rethinking Leadership: Building Integrity and Reputation of Excellence.”

Quoting late Prof. Chinua Achebe, he defined integrity as a blunt refusal to be compromised, which involves honesty and sincerity of intention that drives one’s action.

Noting that knowledge enhances the quality of integrity, which involves conviction of purpose and action, he said the moment a person lacks knowledge, his integrity will be weakened.

He urged every Nigerian to insist on practicing integrity, which he said is the best form of excellence that will ultimately lead to transformation.

In his remarks, Editor-in-Chief, Plummet Publishing, Dr. John Adejoroluwa, who spoke on how integrity will bring the outcome for national development, said integrity is compromised because a lot of people are in a hurry to make it in life.

He said one needed to wait and be patient not to compromise. “Integrity means decency, righteousness, and being ready to address your wrong. He is a man who has imposed discipline on himself and holds onto his conviction without fear. He is not looking for a cheap reputation whether in public or private.  He is ready to earn a reputation based on excellence. This set of people are hard to find.”

Achieving a journey for a transformed society the forum urged the need to begin to build a people of excellence.

Vice-Captain, Ambassador Leadership Programme, Martha Odoh, said: “There is the need for the youths to begin to have a change of mind-set and renewal of transformation of the society. There is the need to start cultivating it in the younger generation to have transformed society with inclusive governance, where the younger ones will be involved in activities that will benefit them.”
