The Minister of State for Labour and employment, Prof. Stephen Ocheni has reiterated the determination of the Federal Government to give priority to workers welfare to cushion the effect of the recent economic recession.

He hinted that Federal Government has also considered the option of constituting a committee for upward review of the minimum wage for workers.

Speaking in Ajaka headquarters of Igalamela/Adolu Local Government area of Kogi State after the commissioning of an ultra modern secretariat and a Guest House built by the Local Government administrator, Ocheni said the aim is to enhance workers living standard.

“The workers are working with us, the workers are members of the wage committee which has been inaugurated by the Federal Government and the inauguration of this committee is a clear testimony that the Government is determined to improve on the wellbeing of workers and that is the same thing the President is doing in all the sectors of the economy.

“When you hear about economic recovery and growth plan, it is a policy of government designed to improve the wellbeing of all of us not even the workers alone to lift the standard of living of Nigerians,” he explained.

Oceni indicated that government wants to ensure that there is improvement of productivity in the public sector.

He added: “By so doing we are working to ensure the growth of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) because when the GDP improves then of course we are moving everyday far out of recession even though we are already out of recession.

“All hands must be on deck for us to give a long gap between the economic stability and recession. So we have moved, we congratulate ourselves because under the leadership of this administration the country has moved out of recession.”

He said for the tempo to be sustained and there must be improved productivity in order to ensure improvement in the welfare of the people.
