Experts in the accounting field have called on professionals to deploy their expertise in the fight against corruption and waste in the country.

Experts in the accounting field have called on professionals to deploy their expertise in the fight against corruption and waste in the country.

They stated this at the investiture of the 10th national chairperson and swearing-in of the new excos and award of scholarships by the Society of Women Accountants of Nigeria (SWAN).

Managing Director, First City Monument Bank (FCMB), Yemisi Edun, stressed that though creativity is excellent, it however cannot replace accountability in measuring, processing and communicating financial and non-financial information about businesses and corporations.

“So, while we embrace creativity, we cannot downplay accountability. If we do not place accountability ahead of creativity, we threaten the sustainability of any business,” Edun said.

She reiterated the need to prepare women in the accounting profession for the ongoing changes in technology, culture and the world of work.

She applauded the body for maintaining high standards in executing its duty, adding the need for the professionals to evolve into becoming one of the world’s noblest professions.
She however called on SWAN to remain leaders in ethics and continue to uphold integrity as the hallmark of the profession.

“I am glad that SWAN has been on a solid growth trajectory. However, keeping gender parity in mind, you are required to be at par with your global peers,” she added

Newly elected Chairperson, SWAN, Catherine Nnaji, expressed gratitude to members for tasking her with the role, saying that her tenure would focus on extending the frontiers of its programmes of activities to include support for widows in the society.

“Empowerment programmes where skills acquisition and provision of basic equipment, machines and raw materials for the small business start-up as well as grants to increase the capacity of some of their existing businesses will be introduced.

“We will run free training programmes on financial intelligence as well as bookkeeping services to enable them to become financially independent and keep proper records of their businesses. The gains of financial empowerment for the women, we all know, have far-reaching benefits for the society at large,” she said.

Governor of Abia State, Okezie Ikpeazu, noted that the investiture was a celebration of excellence for women, adding that there is no shortcut to success, hence the need to cultivate the culture of hard work.

According to him, women need to be encouraged as accountants for the development of the nation.
“The challenge of leadership is very demanding, do remain focused on your vision and refuse distractions,” he added.

Ikpeazu praised Nnaji for the feat, stating that her life portrays diligence, hard work, morality, professionalism and fear of God.
