Ex-director urges CBN governor to credit pensioners’ account

A former Deputy Director of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Chief Olorunfunmi Bashorun has appealed to the Governor of the apex bank, Mr. Godwin Emefiele and its management to urgently release and credit accounts of the Bank’s Pensioners, especially the pre-2001 group with the entitlements approved by the Board of Directors.

In a statement titled: ‘Charity Begins at Home’, Chief Bashorun, who retired from the bank in 1979 said the entitlements are from the salary increase review since 2010, the last time such a review was undertaken.

According to him, “After series of meetings with pre-2001 pensioners club, the bank promised to release the details for benefits of the pensioners after a headcount in January 2020. The headcount took place throughout the country about four months ago but the bank has taken no positive action.”

The octogenarian disclosed he has twice written letters of appeal to Emefiele and also sent four text messages to him, but to no avail. “Many of our colleagues have fallen into the category of vulnerable persons and a number of them have died because of harsh economic circumstances.

“At these crucial and trying times in Nigeria whereby the Central Bank is offering a lot of useful advice to the government to cushion the negative effect of COVID-19 on different sectors of the Nigerian economy, I passionately appeal to the governor and the management to please release for the credit of the accounts of all categories of pensioners of CBN, especially the pre-2001 group the entitlements approved for them now. After all, our elders say “Charity Begins at Home,” he said.
