DLA Piper Africa hosts M&A fair in Lagos

International experts, focusing on mergers and acquisitions (M&A), gathered recently at the Lagos M&A Academy, to update West African professionals on contemporary trends in global mergers and acquisitions processes and practices.

International experts, focusing on mergers and acquisitions (M&A), gathered recently at the Lagos M&A Academy, to update West African professionals on contemporary trends in global mergers and acquisitions processes and practices.The one-day event organised by DLA Piper Africa, in conjunction with Olajide Oyewole LLP, DLA Piper Africa member firm in Nigeria, took place in Victoria Island, Lagos.
 
The event attended by mid and senior level associates working in corporate finance, private equity, in-house legal teams, and strategy departments of organisations was the first in West Africa, and third on the continent.
 
At the workshop, participants were provided with an overview of the key stages of mergers and acquisitions process as well as covered areas such as preliminary agreements, warranties, indemnities and insurance and due diligence.

 
One of the key discussions centered on the different technical skillset required for professionals in the Africa mergers and acquisitions market in comparison to the global one.
 
During the session, it was noted that while the majority of the transactions in Africa relate to buyouts, there is significant investment mergers and acquisitions as well as share subscriptions, minority investments or acquisitions, joint ventures and combinations of share sale and subscription transactions.

Also, participants discussed opportunities around risk sharing, early stage growth, and the availability of financing.The panel speakers for the M&A Academy provided a mix of local knowledge alongside leading international practitioners that include Corporate Partner, DLA Piper, United Kingdom, Chris Baird, who focused on M&A processes and preliminary agreements, subscriptions and minority investments. Also Partner, Olajide Oyewole LLP, Samuel Salako, shared knowledge on due diligence as it pertains to mergers and acquisitions while Location Head of Corporate, DLA Piper, South Africa, Peter Bradshaw, focused on warranties, indemnities and insurance.
