ERSTWHILE President of Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) and current Deputy National President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Mr. Onikolease Irabor, has joined the growing number of labour leaders angling for political offices.
Specifically, Irabor is eyeing Edo Central Senatorial seat in the 2011 general elections on the ticket of the Action Congress. The union leader hails from Esan South East Local Government.
Earlier, another union leader and former President of National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Employees (NUPENG), Mr. Peter Akpatason, had also joined the race for the upper chamber of the National Assembly.
Irabor said he was spurred to join the race due to the current developmental drive in Edo State under the leadership of Governor Adams Oshiomhole.
The Labour leader said the state government under the current administration could be described as one of the best in the history of state.
“I can assist Comrade Oshiomhole in his current revolution in Edo State. I must make it clear that the people of the state are indeed blessed with Oshiomhole in the helm of affairs in Edo State. However, I have no power of my own to do this except my people say I am wanted there.”
The board member of the International Transport Federation (ITF) stated that his years in Labour activism would serve him in good stead in serving Edo people through Ward 10 in Edo Central Senatorial district.
He stated further that come 2011 the People Democratic Party (PDP) shall cease to exist in Edo State, adding: “Let me make this clear, Action Congress (AC) is the party for the future in Nigeria and I want to tell you that I hope to run on that platform by God’s grace if I am called upon to do so by my people. In Edo politics, from now on there would no longer be anything like money or God-fathers type of politics, what you would see is pure ideology and charismatic driven partisan politics.”
Irabor explained that this was achievable in Nigeria just like other parts of the world and that Adams Oshiomhole, Olusegun Mimiko of Ondo State and Governor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos have been able to demonstrate that idea truly rules the world.
“Look at what is happening in Lagos, who would ever belief that one would one day drive through Oshodi to Iyana-Ipaja through to the former Ogun State/Lagos toll-gate but today this is the reality on ground, so this is an indication that change is possible once there is the will,” he said.
The immediate past President General of Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) admitted that change, the only constant thing in life does not come easy but that it was possible. He stated that soon a monumental change would be witnessed in Edo State.
