ICPC sets up anti-corruption academy to train officers
THE Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offences Commission (ICPC), has set up the Anti-Corruption Academy of Nigeria (ACAN) as its training and research centre, to constantly enhance the capacity of its officers as well as other intelligence personnel to fulfill the anti-corruption mandate.
Speaking at the training of some ICPC intelligence officers on Tuesday at the Academy in Keffi, Nasarawa state, its Provost Professor Sola Akinrinade stated that the Academy is planning to introduce postgraduate certificate and diploma programmes as well as Master’s Degree programmes in Anti-Corruption Studies.
“We are in discussion with certain institutions both in Nigeria and United Kingdom to partner in delivering these postgraduate programmes. Our model of delivery is work-based learning and the details are still being worked out”, he said.
Welcoming the first batch of participants drawn from the Intelligence and Security Support Unit (ISSU) of the Commission, Professor Akinrinade said that the teaching and practical sessions put together at the training would build their capacity to carry out their duties effectively and efficiently.
“Without attempting to scare you, I can assure you that the programme will task you but I know at the end you will all be better for it, having been equipped with skills and knowledge that will make you true intelligence officers”, he said.
He said that the leadership of the ICPC has taken steps to prioritize the training and equipping of staff with the appropriate skills that will enhance the performance of their duties.
The provost explained further that the launching of the Academy “is one of the critical steps identified in the medium term Strategic Plan of the ICPC as prerequisite for the attainment of the Commission’s goal and strengthening of its personnel. The leadership of the Academy is also working to ensure that these goals are realized”.
Earlier in her opening speech, the Head of ISSU, Ms. Sharon Ogiri charged the participants to take the four-week programme serious and live up to the slogan of the unit, which is, “it may be difficult but not impossible”.
She also asked them to conduct themselves with decorum throughout the duration of the programme.
