Former members of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly have demanded their inclusion in the payment of pensions in line with what is paid to former governors and their deputy governors in the state.

Acting Chairman of the forum, and Chairman of the State Environmental Sanitation Authority, Robert Ayalla Enogha made the demand at the House sitting, which was attended by current and old members, including those who served the old Rivers State.

Enogha said since it was the House that passed the law for former governors and their deputies to benefit from pensions after retirement, it is wrong to treat the former lawmakers as ‘casual workers’ without any benefits after contributing their own quota to the development of the state.

He, therefore, urged the speaker and members of the House to do the needful and enact a legislation that would accommodate former lawmakers in the state pensions scheme. This he said would assist the former lawmakers to repackage themselves and forge ahead with their lives without much difficulty.

The special session, which marked the end of the second session of the sixth Assembly, had the theme, “Impact of the Legislature on Development: Bayelsa State in Retrospect.”

Among those who made contributions were, Jonathan Obuebite, currently the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Tonye Isenah, who represents Kolokuma/Opokuma 1, Daniel Igali, Southern Ijaw 111 and T.K.O. Okorotie, former member, old Rivers State Assembly, among others.

They all acknowledged the role of the legislature in a democracy, saying it had impacted positively in the development of the state

Meanwhile, the Bayelsa Government has advised protesting primary school teachers in the state to always seek dialogue with the government before resorting to embarking on protests.
