Bank gets recognition for promoting intra-Africa trade
The Africa-America Institute (AAI), has awarded its 2020 International Institution of Excellence Award to the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank), for its commitment to the creation and implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA), and its ongoing dedication to investing in education.
The Bank received the award during the Institute’s 36th Awards Gala, held virtually, to become the first organisation to receive the award in the history of the Institute since its establishment in 1953.
Between 2015 and 2019, Afreximbank disbursed more than $30 billion in support of African trade, with over $15 billion channelled towards the financing and promotion of intra-Africa trade. The Bank was also recognised for its response and support to African countries in fighting the COVID-19 pandemic.
Receiving the award, President, Afreximbank, Prof. Benedict Oramah, said the Bank was proud of the work it was doing to support Africa, noting that the award recognises its hard work and commitment to Africa’s development.
He said the Bank was focused on promoting intra-African trade, especially through the AfCFTA agreement, and believes that greater trade and regional integration with the continent would make it possible for it to transform from a commodity-dependent economy to one driven by value creation.
He maintained that he was confident the recognition would lead to the creation of many opportunities for Africa’s growing youth population.
Other awardees included the President of the Republic of Niger, Mahamadou Issoufou (President Leadership Award), people of the Republic of Senegal (National Achievement Award) received by its President, Macky Sall, and Managing Director and Chief Innovation Officer, Sèmè City Development Agency, Ms. Claude Borna, (Distinguished Alumna Award).
Others were President and Director of Counsel, NAACP Legal Defence and Educational Fund, Inc, Sherrilyn Ifill (African Diaspora Equity and Justice Award), Emmy Nominated Actress, Producer and Writer, Issa Rae (Leadership in Arts and Culture Award).
The awards recognised and honoured distinguished group of leaders, who were using their influence and creativity to affect real and measurable change.

Since inception, the AAI has been committed to promoting enlightened engagement between Africa and America through strengthening human capacity of Africans and promoting the continent’s development of education, training and dialogue.
