The Abia state government has approved the appointments of two physically challenged persons as Special Assistants to each of the 17 Local Government Areas Transition Committee Chairmen as recently directed by the state Governor, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu.

The directive was a response series of appeals to the Governor by the physically challenged persons who claimed to be educationally and professionally qualified for employment in the state service to provide them the platform to contribute their quotas to the development of the state.

The governor also approved the award of tertiary education scholarship tenable in Nigerian institutions to the best student in each of the 17 local government areas of the state.

He said he was elated by the sustained topmost performances and top ranking of Abia state students in the West African School Certificate Examinations (WASCE).

The Governor who urged youths in the state to take advantage of the skills acquisition centers in the state established by his government to acquire skills that will make them self-reliant rather than engaging in Commercial Tricycle operation, added that tricycle operation is not the best way to empower the youths hence.

He had recently rewarded the adjudged three best primary teachers in each of the three senatorial zones of the state with a Camry Car each and appealed to private individuals and organizations to support his “adopt a school” program that is aimed at helping government fast track infrastructural renewal in Abia Schools.

According to the Chief Press to the governor, Enyi Appolos, the detailed results of the May/June 2015 West African Examination Council (WAEC) recently released state by state showed that Abia emerged the best performing state, while 35 other states and Abuja queued behind.

He added: “Abia State has consistently maintained top position in the WASSCE performance chart in the past five years. In the results released for 2014 and 2013 Abia came second behind Anambra State but it has now overtaken Anambra state as the overall best and first in the WASCE performance chart for 2015 examinations. The State topped the chart with 33, 762 of its 52, 801 candidates, scoring 63.94 per cent.”

Appolos stated that the governor has further challenged the state Education Commissioner, teachers and students in the state to ensure that the state maintains this top position, promising that he will do everything possible to ensure more improved students and teachers welfare to enhance their performances in teaching and future examinations and recently flagged off free-school – meal programme, which he vowed would be sustained.
