NDLEA apprehends 109 drug trafficking suspects

The Edo Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) said it apprehended 109 persons for trafficking in illicit drug in the third quarter of 2015.

Commander of the agency in the state, Mr Buba Wakawa, disclosed this to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Benin on Tuesday.

Wakawa said that the arrested suspects were 81 males and 28 female.

He also said the command secured conviction of two suspects within the period, adding that 30 cases were still in court.

He said that 3, 428.8 kilograms of substance suspected to cannabis sativa otherwise known as Indian hemp and 36.2 grams of substance suspected to be cocaine were seized in the state during the period.

He added that about 40 grams of suspected psychotropic substances were also seized.

The commander disclosed that 19 farmlands measuring 44,000 hectares in parts of the state were destroyed for cultivating suspected cannabis plant.

He said that the farmlands were in Ovia North-East, Owan West and Etsako West Local Government Areas.

He said that during the period, 50 heavy users of illicit drugs were counselled and rehabilitated, adding that three of the rehabilitated addicts were brought for counselling by their parents, and one from the court.

According to him, the man from the court was recommended for six months rehabilitation after serving his jail term.
