George, who was an assistant to former handler, Jose Peseiro, was named head coach recently in Abuja by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF). His first assignment will come up on June 7 at the Nest of Champions in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, where the Super Eagles will host the Bafana Bafana of South Africa before playing away to the Cheetahs of Benin a few days later in Cote d’Ivoire.

According to a local website, the Nottingham Forest defender said the Super Eagles are only thinking of winning both matches to progress in Group C of the qualifying series.

“What is on my mind is to win and progress and also to welcome the new coach. The appointment of the coach (Finidi George) is good for the team and the nation”, he said.

Meanwhile, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) is expected to announce the names of players for the two games this weekend or early next week. According to a source at the Federation, all the players expected to feature in the game have been contacted and made to understand why it is important for the team to assemble on time for preparations for the matches.

He said the team against South Africa will comprise mainly the players that featured at the last Africa Cup of Nations in Cote d’Ivoire, with a few additions due to availability of some stars, who could not make the AFCON team due to various reasons.
