The Pharmaceutical Association of Nigeria Students (PANS) of the University of Benin, Edo State, has organised free medical services for secondary and fellow students, as well as traders at Oliha Market, Benin, as part of activities to mark the 37th edition of its yearly Health Week.

Tagged, ‘Ethikos 2016,’ the programme is targeted at reaching more than 10, 000 persons, including students and members of host communities. This year’s programme, which has two sessions, addressed urinary tract infection and obesity.

Addressing the crowd in pidgin at Oliha market, Hope Onyemaechi, taught the traders to always watch what they eat, as eating the wrong food could increase the propensity to obesity.
Hope discouraged the traders from taking drinks ridden with sugar, as this may trigger diabetes.

In a chat with Campusnews, the president of PANS, Benjamin Idiakhoa, expressed satisfaction that the traders turned out in large number. He said without the traders, the programme would not have been a success.

“Health week is a yearly event of UNIBEN Pharmacy School. This year’s edition is different because the number of people to reach with free drugs was increased to 10,000 by the executives.”

The chairperson, PANS Week Organising Committee (PWOC), Gift Onororakpene, commended the sponsors of the rally and those who provided the free drugs that the traders benefited from. “May and Baker, Evans Pharmaceutical, GlaxoSmithKline, GPS Pharmacy and Swipha. Our appreciation goes to them all,” she said.

Meanwhile, the Anti-drug Misuse and Abuse Programme (ADMAP), under the office of the PANS president also organised an outreach at the Hall 2 car park. Services provided included, free HIV test, free Hepatitis B screening and subsidised vaccination, and free drugs to combat Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs).

Speaking at the outreach, the ADMAP chairman, Isaac Ehimen, advised ladies to maintain good hygiene, as this would save them from infections. He stressed that UTIs are on the increase and especially among student communities.
