Zenith Bank has congratulated the Ikoyi Club 1938 swimming team for emerging overall winners at a recent international swimming event that took place in Germany.

Zenith Bank has congratulated the Ikoyi Club 1938 swimming team for emerging overall winners at a recent international swimming event that took place in Germany.

The swim squad from Ikoyi Club won the 47th international swimming competition at Neheim-Husten, Germany only last month with Zenith Bank as the major sponsor of the swimming team.

The Group Managing Director of Zenith Bank, Peter Amangbo, was elated over the development as he urged the club to keep developing future champions for Nigeria.

Amangbo said: “Swimming is a medal-spinning event but Nigeria has not being doing well in the event at continental and global stage. What the Ikoyi club has done with some young ones shows that there are talents in the country that could still be tapped to boost swimming.

“We are very proud about the feat achieved by the club which is also a product of the annual swimming event which we sponsor at Ikoyi Club.”

Ikoyi Club 1938 came in 1st place overall, out of 30 Swimming Clubs representing seven countries.

“Our swimmers won a total of 75 gold medals, 59 silver medals, 38 bronze medals, several certificates and trophies for outstanding performance in different categories. Many swimmers also attained personal best times in their events. A total of 39 swimmers represented Ikoyi Club, ranging in age from 9 to 15 years old” said Oloyede Obatoyinbo, Vice Chairman/Games Captain of the swimming section at Ikoyi Club 1938.

According to him, the top medallists include: Abduljabar Adama – 12 gold; Maria Perner – seven gold, four silver, one bronze; Kayo Adeniji – six gold, two silver, one Bronze; Iman Adama – six gold, one silver; and Yimika Akerele – five gold, four sliver.

In his remarks, the Chairman of the Swimming Section, Ikoyi Club 1938, Mr. Abayomi Ogundipe, said of the squad, “their exceptional performance and conduct no doubt qualifies them as good ambassadors of Ikoyi Club 1938, their various schools, as well as Nigeria and are thus, worthy to be celebrated.”
