Warri North top, as Delta sports festival ends

• Okowa Promises Yearly Games
The sixth Delta State festival was concluded yesterday with Warri North Local Government Area topping the medals table.

At the closing ceremony held at Ozoro Polytechnic Stadium, Governor Ifeanyi Okowa assured that he would make the Games a yearly event, just as he congratulated the athletes and their officials for a job well done.

He promised his administration’s commitment to ensure that the state continue to excel in national sports events.

Declaring the festival closed, Governor Okowa said: “it is an open secret that the constant successes achieved by Delta State in national competitions is largely due to this grassroots support for sports.”

The Delta State Sports festival, tagged Unity Games returned after 12 years. Governor Okowa said that making the Games to hold yearly would not only make Delta State athletes and their officials to be fully prepared for challenges ahead, but will also make sporting facilities in the state to serve its useful purposes.

Sports Minister, Solomon Dalung who was among top dignitaries at the closing ceremony, commended Delta State government for raising the bar in the nation’s sporting activities.

At the end of four days of sporting activities across four centers, Warri North got a total of 106 medals made up of 31 gold, 31 silver and 57 bronze medals.

Oshimili South followed with 29 gold, 32 silver and 34 bronze medals, just as Aniocha South finished third with 27 gold, 13 silver and 18 bronze medals.

Among elite athletes who participated in the festival include Nigeria sprinter Ogho-Oghene Egwero, who ran 10.34 seconds to emerge champions in the 100m event, and 20.07 seconds to clinch the 200m gold medal.

Another elite athlete, Austin Monye, threw 51.01 meters to win the men’s discuss event, while Ineh Neyiwa wrote his name in gold, winning the men’s triple jump as well as the long jump event.
