Team Nigeria wins West Africa King of Mountain Cycling Championship

Nigerian cyclists at the weekend showed their prowess in the sport by dominating the International West Africa Cycling Championship held in the stretch of Kwahu Eastern region of Ghana.

The team, led by Kurotimi Abaka beat Ghana’s Solomon Tagoe to the second position, while Burkina Faso’s Guigmde Arnaud came third at the one-day event.

The cycling championship, tagged ‘West Africa King of the Mountain Cycling Championship,’ was put together by a consortium comprising Ghana Tourism Authority, Ministry of Tourism, Art and Culture, the Traditional leaders in KWAHU and the Ghana Cycling Federation.

60 cyclists from Ghana, Burkina Faso, Togo, Cote d’Ivoire, Benin Republic, Nigeria and 12 clubs from the host nation competed in the cycling tourney, which covered a short but heated climb distance of 48.57 km.

In the Nigerian team were three cyclists coached by Kamoli Amoo and sponsored by FT Cycle Care in conjunction with Ogun State Cycling Federation.

According to the organisers of the event, the cycling championship was also  organised to celebrate the World Tourism Day.

The Ghana Cycling Federation said the West African King of the Mountain Championship, which covered Nkawkaw – Mpraeso – Obo and back to Mpreaso through Abetifi – Abene – Ewefwe and back to finishing at Abene in front of the Paramount chief’s palace, has come to stay. 

The Ghana Tourism Authority, Ministry of Tourism, Art and Culture, the traditional leaders of KWAHU and the Cycling federation also assured it would become to more  glamorous in the coming years.

The teams at the 2018 King of Mountain Cycling Championship got various cash prizes and products from the sponsors.
