The 17 athletes chosen to represent Team Nigeria in seven sports at the forthcoming Youth Olympic Games in Argentina departed for Buenos Aires yesterday hopeful of winning medals to enhance their chances of graduating into the main Olympics in 2020.

Team Nigeria will feature in athletics, badminton, boxing, canoeing, golf, table tennis and wrestling at the games, which will hold from October 6 to 18.

Shortly before their departure, the athletes were officially handed over to the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) by the Permanent Secretary at the Sports Ministry, Olusade Adesola, who represented the Sports Minister, Solomon Dalung at the event.

Adesola told the athletes that dedication and determination earned them the ticket to represent the country at the Youth Olympics in Argentina, adding, “some of you that were in the recent Africa Youth Games in Algeria will recall that over 300 athletes were in the team.

But now, just 17 of you were selected, and that goes to explain that the standard is real high in the Youth Olympics and the high level of competitiveness.”

Adesola cautioned the athletes to compete clean without using any performance enhancing substances in their quest to win medals.
