Team Civil Defence overpowers Oluyole in NCC Tennis League
Team Civil Defence has recorded their first win of the season in the on-going NCC Tennis League as they overwhelmed Team Oluyole 7-0. The match took place in Ibadan.
The Abuja-based side had lost 3-4 at home to Team Muller of Lagos, in the season’s opener, but regained their rhythm in Ibadan last weekend.
Team Civil Defence secured the four needed points on the opening day to win the fixture.
Nonso Maduekwe began the day’s 4-0 episode at the Lekan Salami Stadium tennis courts as he defeated Kunle Bamidele 6-1, 6-2 in the men’s singles.
Another home-boy, Salami Ganiyu, in the men’s singles, bowed to former national champion, Clifford Enosorogbe 6-2, 6-4.
In the ladies singles, youngster, Kaosarat Adegboyega, who made her debut in the NCC League, bowed to the Dala Hard Court title holder, Christy Agugbom, in a match, which almost turned to a one-sided affair with the scoreline as 6-0, 6-1.
Kaosarat, who impressed many spectators at the terrace after losing the first set, however, came back stronger to win the first game in the second set to the surprise of many, but was unable to match the fireworks from the 2008 and 2014 CBN champion, Agugbom, in the remaining games.
The 2015 NCC League inaugural winners completed the routing of the hosts in the men’s doubles as the pair of reigning CBN champion,
Abdulmumuni Babalola and Clifford Enosorogbe humiliated the duo of Adewale Samson and Salami Ganiyu 6-1, 6-0.
The next day, the visitors also dominated the hosts in the remaining three games.
Chima Michael in the reverse men’s singles defeated Ismaila Adesina 6-3, 7-6, as Nonso Maduekwe subdued veteran Wasiu Ibrahim 6-4, 6-3, while in the mixed doubles, the duo of AbdulMumuni Babalola and Christy Agugbom hammered the pair of Kunle Bamidele and Kaosarat Adegboyega 6-0, 6-0.
