Sixth Delta Sports festival begins May 8

The sixth Delta State Sports Festival has been scheduled to commence on May 8 to May 12, and will be held at four different venues spread across the state that include Asaba, Agbor, Obiaruku and Ozoro.

The sixth Delta State Sports Festival has been scheduled to commence on May 8 to May 12, and will be held at four different venues spread across the state that include Asaba, Agbor, Obiaruku and Ozoro.

According to a statement in Asaba by a member of the organising committee, Mr. Sunny Edoge, the opening and closing ceremonies will hold at the newly commissioned Ozoro Polytechnic ultra-modern Sports Stadium.

Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta State is expected to declare the festival open while Minister of Sports, Solomon Dalung, will be the Special Guest of Honour among other dignitaries and sports enthusiasts that will grace the occasion, the statement said.

Twenty-four events would feature at the festival that include athletics, para-athletics and football schedules to take place at Ozoro, while swimming and cycling will be held at Obiaruku and Agbor, respectively.

At Asaba venue, the events are boxing, chess, badminton, judo, kungfu, karate, golf, gymnastics, scrabble, trado-ayo, table tennis, and wrestling.

Others are taekwondo, weightlifting, para-lifting, tennis and para-tennis. Each of the 25 local government areas in the state is expected to conduct a mini sports meet to prepare, select, and present athletes that will represent them in the festival with a minimum of 50 athletes in all the various sports events.

The state’s programmed and non-programmed athletes will be given the opportunity to compete for honours, which will also be used for trials and selection of athletes that will represent the state in future zonal, national and international sports competitions.

The local government areas, which shall emerge first, second and third positions shall win cash prizes and trophies, while the winning athletes shall receive medals and opportunity to be absorbed into the sports programme of the state.
