The Nigeria Scrabble Federation (NSF) has selected 15 players for the World and Africa Scrabble Championship scheduled to hold later in the year.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the selection was done at the end of a four-day trial held in Abuja by the federation.

Anthony Ikolo, NSF senior national coach, told NAN that seven top players out of the 15 would represent the country at the world championship schedule to hold in Lille, France, from Aug. 29 to Sept. 4.

He said the players were expected to move into camping soon, depending on the availability of funds.

The players were; Dennis Ikekerogor, Rex Ogbakpa, Eta Karo, Wellington Jighere (World Champion), Olatunde Oduwole, Nsikak Etim (African Champion), Tuoyo Mayuku, Prince Omosefe, and Onota Oteheri.

The others were; Quickpen Ben, Oshevire Avwenagha, Cyril Umebiye, Enoch Nwali, Adebisi Adekansi, and Emmanuel Ede.
Meanwhile, Ikekerogor emerged overall winner of the qualifying tournament, winning 34 of his 50 games.

Ikekerogor said: “first I give God the glory and I thanked him for everything.

“It was a tough one for me because I competed with some stiffer opponents and they gave me some good fight.

“I am happy that I competed with the world champion and came out as the best player; that means that I am in form,’’ Ikekerogor said.

He said that most of the players were already training on their own because of lack of funding from the federation and the Ministry of Youth and Sports Development.
