WAYNE Rooney has equalled Sir Bobby Charlton’s England scoring record after converting a penalty in Saturday’s Euro 2016 qualifier in San Marino.

Referee Leontios Trattou awarded England a penalty in the 12th minute after spotting a push on Rooney by Marco Berardi, who was booked.

Rooney seemed bemused by the awarding of the penalty, which seemed harsh, but tucked the spot-kick away to move level with Charlton’s 49-goal tally.

The Manchester United striker looked up and raised both hands to the sky before waving to his wife Coleen and son Kai in the stands. Rooney now needs one more goal to break Charlton’s record, which has stood for 45 years.
