depayGoalkeeper Sergio Romero and forward Memphis Depay were among four new players selected to start for Manchester United against Tottenham Hotspur in Saturday’s opening Premier League fixture at Old Trafford.

Argentina international Romero replaced David de Gea, who has been dropped by manager Louis van Gaal over concerns he has become unsettled by reports linking him with Real Madrid.

Depay, who has inherited the number seven shirt vacated by Angel di Maria, was expected to line up behind lone striker Wayne Rooney, while fellow new recruits Matteo Darmian and Morgan Schneiderlin also made the XI.

With Tottenham goalkeeper Hugo Lloris short of fitness following a wrist injury, Michel Vorm started between the posts for the visitors, while Toby Alderweireld made his debut in central defence.

United’s players are to wear black armbands in memory of Neville Neville, father of their former players Gary and Phil, following his death in Australia on Friday.
