RYDER Cup team-mates Lee Westwood and Graeme McDowell share the lead on six-under par after round one of the Maybank Malaysian Open. The duo carded identical rounds of 66 at Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club, with seven birdies and one bogey each to lead a trio of players by one stroke after the first 18 holes.

England’s Tommy Fleetwood, American Danny Chia and Sunghoon Kang all signed for a 67 and are in a great position heading into today’s second round, while Spain’s Alejandro Canizares, Richard Bland of England, Denmark’s Anders Hansen and Prom Meesawat of Thailand sit in a tie for sixth place on -4.

Six players, including victorious Ryder Cup captain, Paul McGinley and one of his charges, Stephen Gallacher, are a further shot back, while Bernd Wiesberger, Nicolas Colsaerts, Andy Sullivan and Robert Rock are among a large group of players who reached -2 after their opening round.

But it was all about Westwood and McDowell yesterday and, after the pair shared ninth place at last week’s Dubai Desert Classic, they still cannot be separated.
