Home-based Idamadudu eyes another upset

Africa and Commonwealth gold medalist, Blessing Okagbare-Ighoteguonor will feature in three events, 100m, 200m and the long jump in this year’s Rio Olympics Games. That was the submission by her grassroots coach Daniel Etsebiminor yesterday, while speaking with The Guardian in Lagos.

Okagbare came into limelight after winning a ‘golden bronze’ in the long jump at Beijing 2008 Olympics, but for sometime now, she has concentrated more on 100m and 200m. She was a 100m finalist at London 2012 Olympics and the last IAAF World Championship in Beijing, China.

With preparation for this year’s Rio Olympics gradually picking up, Etsebiminor said he is sure Okagbare would combine the three events this time.

“I monitor her performance in every competitions and I also speak with her from time to time. She will participate in the 100m, 200m and the long jump in Rio,” Etsebiminor told The Guardian yesterday at the Yaba College of Technology, Lagos, during the Pastor D.K Olukoya’s U-20 Athletics championship.

Meanwhile, one of Nigeria’s rising stars on the track, Praise Oghenefejiro Idamadudu is eyeing another upset in the battle to make Team Nigeria’s Olympics team.

Idamadudu, a junior athlete, was the cynosure of all eyes at the Warri City Stadium last year, when she outclassed US-based star, Gloria Asumnu, to win the women 200m title during a trials used in selecting the athletes for the World IAAF Championship in China.
