Nigeria’s female wrestlers shine in Morocco

Olympians Odunayo Adekuoroye, Blessing Oborududu, Aminat Adeniyi and new-comer, Bisola Makanjuola, at the weekend won their events in the female freestyle held at the Africa Senior Wrestling Championships holding in Marrakech, Morocco.

Fighting in the 55kg, World bronze medalist, Adekuoroye subdued her opponent, Anike Gbadamassi, from Benin in 8-0 pit fall, while Africa’s champion, Oborududu (63kg) defeated her challenger Senegalese Binta Senghor 2-0 also on pit fall.

Adeniyi (58kg) had no mercy for her opponent, Camerounian Getrude Yondno, who she overpowered in 10-0 result, as Makanjuola also conquered Camerounian Edwige Eyia in 4-0.

The only loss in the females’ category came from Samuel, who competed in the 53 kg. The Nigerian was eventually beaten after a 3-3 draw with the Tunisia opponent, Maroi Mezien, as Mezien went ahead to carry the day by last point scored.

According to the President of the Nigeria Wrestling Federation, Daniel Igali, in a message to The Guardian from Morocco, expressed satisfaction with the performances of the athletes, while hoping to come back with medals from the championship both from the males and the females.

The competition, however, ends today in Morocco.
