Nigeria for Georgia 2017 Chess World tourney

Oluwafemi Balogun at the weekend won the West Africa Chess championship hosted in Monrovia, Liberia. The tournament tagged: Zone 4.4 Chess Championship featured five self-sponsored Nigerians to the tournament.

Oluwafemi Balogun at the weekend won the West Africa Chess championship hosted in Monrovia, Liberia. The tournament tagged: Zone 4.4 Chess Championship featured five self-sponsored Nigerians to the tournament.

With this victory according to the organisers, Balogun becomes the current International Master in Africa and the sixth Nigerian to win the International Master.

For coming tops at the tournament, Balogun will compete with other international stars at the world tourney fixed for Georgia this year. Speaking with The Guardian yesterday, the General Secretary of Chess Players Association of Nigeria Ogunsiku Babatunde, said the feat achieved has made the nation one of the best in the world.

‘’We are happy for this achievement, the victory of Balogun has brought to fore that Nigeria has talents in chess. Chess as a sport needs sponsor to develop talents in the country. Competing at the world cup will give the nation another stride in the sport. The other players in the tourney also won titles. Chess players in Nigeria are proud of the players who used all means to sponsor themselves to Liberia,’’ he said.
