Odunayo Adekuoroye’s victory in the 55kg, Blessing Oborududu (63kg), Mercy Genesis (48kg), Aminat Adeniyi (58kg), Kemeasuodei Dressman (69kg) and Gofit Winnie (75kg) ensured that nation won six gold medals in the female freestyle.

World bronze medalist, Odunayo Adekuoroye, is among the 10 wrestlers that did the nation proud at the just concluded Senior Africa Wrestling Championships in Marrakech, Morocco…at the weekend.

The nation’s contingent to this year’s Senior African Wrestling Championships has come back home with eight gold and two silver medals. The event was held at Marrakech, Morocco.

Odunayo Adekuoroye’s victory in the 55kg, Blessing Oborududu (63kg), Mercy Genesis (48kg), Aminat Adeniyi (58kg), Kemeasuodei Dressman (69kg) and Gofit Winnie (75kg) ensured that nation won six gold medals in the female freestyle.

While also in the female freestyle, both Bose Samuel, who contested in the 53kg and Bisola Makanjuola (60kg) were not so lucky, as they got silver medals.

In the freestyle men’s cadre, Soso Tamarau in 97kg and Ogbonna Emmanuel John (70kg) clinched gold medals. However, the nation could not record any success in the men’s Greco Roman event.

Speaking with The Guardian on the championships in Morocco, President of the Nigeria Wrestling Federation, Daniel Igali, said the athletes did him proud despite the paucity of fund available during the athletes’ preparation for the championships.

“Considering the preparation for this tournament and the circumstances surrounding the release of funds, I will say I am very proud of these athletes and their results.

“They had to cope with a lot of distractions during their training. Most of them were outstanding in their performances at this tournament. And as a team, they performed well above average; and for that I want to applaud them for their over all performance,” he said.

The team, however, returned home yesterday morning.
