Group Managing Director of MTN Nigeria, Mike Ikpoki, who teamed up with Olateju Ogunwomoju to win the just concluded International Pairs competition at the Golf Section of the Ikoyi Club 1938, has promised to represent the country honourably at the world finals of the competition in Alicante, Spain, later this year.

Ikpoki and Ogunwomoju grossed a total of 126-points to defeat over 18 other pairs in the competition played over 36-holes.

For their effort the duo will be given an all expense paid trip to Alicante in Spain, where they will represent Nigeria at the world finals of the 2015 International Pairs competition.

Looking forward to a rewarding experience at the world finals, Ikpoki promised, “We will do our best and give Nigerians a good representation. Though the two-day event was tough especially when you look at the caliber of players of the course, our determination to excel, especially on the second day saw us through.”

At the championship that attracted the cream of Nigerian golfers, Tim Fisher and Monday Eze won the second position, while the team of Toriola Johnson and Uwem Udoh came in the third position. The duo of Udoh and Johnson netted 124-points to lose the tournament by 2-points.

Happy at the turnout of the competition, the Chief Executive Officer of Falcon Golf Development Company, the event’s franchise holder in Nigeria, Remi Olukoya, disclosed the tournament was in fulfillment of his lifelong dream of setting up a golf academy in Lagos.

“To me the event is not just about organising a tournament, I also see it as a vehicle for the growth of the game, especially at the youth level in the country.”

Also speaking at the end of the event, a former captain at the club, Ebiyemi Pinnick, said setting up a golf academy that will cater for the up and coming ones has been long overdue. He called on every Nigerian to support the initiative.

Lenovo, Posche, Spar and The George sponsored the two-day event.
