Troubled Enugu Rangers were turned back by struggling ABS FC, which beat the defending champions 2-0 in Ilorin in the Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL).

Rangers have been in the news for the wrong reasons, including the club’s decision to arrest and detain their former coach, Imama Amakapabo amid claims they owe the 2016 league-winning coach up to N40 million.

Goals by Abubakar Chindo in the 15th minute and Wasiu Alalade in the 51st were all the Ilorin side needed to take the three points from the champions, who are now back in the relegation zone.

While Rangers were being thrashed by ABS, their eastern neighbours, Enyimba were having a rough time of it in Ibadan, where they lost 0-1 to 3SC. The loss through Abayomi Adebayo’s eight-minute strike ensured that Enyimba did not narrow the gap on Plateau United, who were held to a goalless draw by Lobi Stars in Makurdi. But the win dragged 3SC, now in 16th position on 40 points, two spots away from the drop zone. Enyimba are still fourth on 47 points, while Plateau maintain the lead on 55 points.

Ubong Friday and Christian Pyagbara scored in both halves to hand title contenders, Akwa United a precious 2-1 victory over Nasarawa United. Nasarawa United had taken the lead in the 38th minute through Aminu Kadir before the Uyo team came back to claim the points.

Akwa United are now second on the log with 50 points and still have a game in hand.Sunshine Stars defeated El-Kanemi Warriors 1-0 in Ijebu Ode with Sikiru Alimi getting the goal in the 34th minute for Duke Udi’s side.

Kano Pillars defeated struggling Remo Stars 2-0 at the Sani Abacha through goals by Nyima Nwagua (15th minute) and Sikiru Kamal (39th minute). Elsewhere, FC IfeanyiUbah were held to a 2-2 draw by Gombe United in Nnewi, Abia Warriors secured a precious goalless draw at Niger Tornadoes, while Rivers United beat Wikki Tourists 3-1 in Port Harcourt.

In Lagos, the game between MFM FC and Katsina United was called off, as the pitch was rendered useless to football by a heavy downpour. It will now hold this morning.
