THE Lagos State government has promised continuous support for anything that would encourage sports development, which it sees as capable of generating revenue for the state.

Speaking while commissioning Ikeja Golf Club’s new clubhouse last weekend, the state Governor, Mr. Akinwumi Ambode, who was represented by the Chairman of Lagos State Sports Commission, Deji Tinubu, promised to continue to support every endeavor that encourages sports tourism in the state, saying he hoped the club would produces golfers like Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy.

Earlier in his speech, the Club Captain, Air Commodore Tokunbo Ajomale (rtd), informed the gathering that Ikeja Golf Club did not only play a leading role in promoting ecological balance in the state’s capital, but it also served as a tourist attraction for sports men and women, as well as a platform for corporate social interaction.

While thanking the state for bankrolling the reconstruction, the captain promised on behalf of his members to put the club house into good use.

“I want to use this opportunity to express our profound appreciation to the governor and the state government for their support. We shall forever remain grateful and we promise to put the building into good use,” the captain said.

The reconstruction of Ikeja Golf Club’s new club house started in 2012 under former Governor Babatunde Fashola, who contracted Messrs Arem Global for the job.
The high point of the occasion was the presentation of a custom made new golf set to the state’s governor.

Some of the dignitaries at the commissioning were the clubs president, Dr. Funsho Peter, Clement Olowokande, Gen Olayinka Sule (rtd), and Lagos State APC Chairman, Henry Ajomale among others.
Ikeja Golf Club was established in 1968
