Kings College, Lagos at the weekend emerged the over all winners of the third PWC Chess4Change grand slam competition held at the Okoya Thomas Hall of the Teslim Balogun Stadium.

The tournament, organised for secondary schools in Lagos State, featured 132 pupils from 22 schools and was geared at building students’ self confidence and also aiding their decision making among others.

In the individual game, Sherrif Muhammed of Kings College came first with Victor Adara of Birrel Avenue Senior High School, Yaba ending in the second position, while Pelomoh Jessica from Aunty Ayo Girls, Ikoyi, settled for the third position.

King’s College also came tops in the team’s event, leaving the second position to Birrel Avenue, as Onitolo Community High School, Surulere placed third. Speaking at the occasion, the Special Adviser to the Governor of Lagos State on Sports and Chairman of Lagos State Sports Commission, Mr. Deji Tinubu said sport will help students to improve in their academics and also boost their self-confidence.

“This is a good time for sports in Lagos State. If some of these students were discovered by their coaches and only started this game two years ago, it shows how much they want to learn. It also shows how much they have put in their time and efforts for them to represent their schools.

“The talents that we are seeing today is amazing, and it is up to us to develop them in order for them to become future champions. We will bring them together for mentoring and counsel them in order to develop into full potential,” he said.

Also speaking at the event, representatives of PWC, Eyita Otudor and Kenneth Erikuwe, said chess has helped the students develop analytic skills, deductive reasoning and competitiveness.

In his reaction to the event, the Technical Director of Lagos State Chess Association, Mr. Banji Babalola said the talents discovered at the championship would be called to camp with the best picked to represent the state and eventually the nation at future international events.
