The Students of the Vocational Training Centre for the blind, Oshodi, are warming up for their 21st annual inter house sports competition on March 17 at Yaba College of Technology.

At the press briefing in Lagos, the Chairman of Federal Nigeria Society for the Blind, Fola Osibo said, sport is more important to a blind or visually impaired person because it open an avenue to do something more than the restricted mobility that loss of sight has caused.

Osibo said that the exercise was to encourage the visually challenge person to engage in physical activity to develop skills and social interaction by boosting their confidence level.

Chairman, Inter-House Sport Committee, Kehinde Danmole said that vocational training centre students participate in the school inter house sport competition every year, adding: “we usually invite the parent and general public to come and see what the blind can achieve through sports.”

He said that the institute had been encouranged over the years by the enthusiasm and abilities of the students who have in the past been selected to join the Lagos state sport teams in different competitions.

Danmole described the feat of their para-Olympians at the London 2012 Games saying that they were able to prove that Nigeria has great talents in physically challenged people.

He stated further that the initiative of inter house sport should serve as an eye-opener for government and communities to start investing in the lives of the children and all persons living with disabilities.

Danmole applauded the support by the Rector of Yaba Tech for permitting them to use the facility free saying: “This is the type of collaboration we need to enhance our work.
