Thrilled by the excellent performance from a team of young swimmers who flew the nation’s flag at the 46th International Swimming Competition in Neheim-Husten, Germany, the management of the Swimming Section, Ikoyi Club 1938, has concluded plans to host the swimmers and their coaches in an elaborate reception on July 15.

With 42 gold, 39 silver and 35 bronze medals, the young swimmers from Ikoyi Club 1938 finished top of the table, beating competitors from 35 Swimming Clubs from seven countries.

The swimmers, drawn from various schools in Lagos also returned home with several certificates and trophies for outstanding performance in different categories, just as many of them attained personal best times in their events.

The vice chairman/Games Captain of the Swimming Section at Ikoyi Club, Oloyede Obatoyinbo, told The Guardian yesterday hosting the young swimmers and their handlers would further boast their morale. “It is a way of telling them that we appreciate their efforts,” he said.

During the competition in Germany, the Nigerians (age 9-13 years) excelled in different areas, including the 100m, 4x100m freestyle relay and medley relay team.

Obatoyinbo stated that he was particularly proud of the girls and boys relay teams. While the girls came first in the 4x100m Freestyle Relay, the boys finished second in the Medley Relay team.

Among the simmers who gave good account of themselves at the competition are Abduljabar Adama (8 gold, 1 silver), Chukwudi Kanu (6 gold, 5 silver), Maria Perner (5 gold, 4 silver, 1 bronze), Kayo Adeniji (5 gold, 3 silver) and Iman Adama (3 gold, 4 silver, 1 bronze).
