An educationist, Mrs. Joy Onwueme, has called on the federal and states’ governments to revive sports activities in primary and secondary schools if they desired a better future for the country.

Onwueme, who is the proprietress of Cedar Heights Demonstration School, Ejigbo, Lagos, lamented the prevailing absence of sports activities in Nigerian schools and urged governments to revive inter-school sports events in the country.

Speaking during this year’s Cedar Heights Demonstration School annual inter-house sports competition, Onwueme said: “Sporting activities help in the fight against crime in schools. What we hear today is cult wars in our schools and even in our primary schools, children are involved in cult activities because there are no other activities to keep them busy outside normal class work.

“After normal school work, what do we think should occupy the children’s minds? We are in the cities and children don’t go to farms the way it is done in the villages. Most children are idle and an idle mind is occupied with evil thinking and that is why we must keep the children busy with extra curricular activities such as sports. It would go a long way in combating crime and criminality in schools.”

Also, part of the inter-house sports event were 15 schools drawn from across Lagos, which competed for trophies and medals.

“Today, we invited 15 other schools to compete for trophies and medals and they are all happy. This is our maiden inter-house competition, yet the field is filled with people. This is an indication that the children need sports to keep them busy. Can you imagine where the magnitude of the children would have been today if not for the sporting activities going on today? Majority of them would have been committing one crime or the other,” Onwueme said.
