The Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) has expressed optimism that the national women team (D’ Tigress) will have a successful outing at the 2015 AfroBasket Championship, which dunked off yesterday in Cameroun.

The female basketball team, which won the silver medal at the just-concluded African Games in Congo Brazzaville, arrived at the venue of the championship on Tuesday to acclimatise ahead of their opening tie.

NBBF Secretary, Patrick Okeke, said yesterday that the Federation had given the girls all the needed assistance to overcome their opponents in the tournament, adding that the male team’s victory in the AfroBasket Championship in Tunisia would also spur the ladies to aim for victory in the championship.

Okeke also disclosed that the federation has made adequate arrangement to mobilise Nigerians resident in Yaoundé to come out en masse to support D’Tigress.

“The NBBF is optimistic that the girls would repeat the feat of their male counterparts in Yaoundé. We have given the technical crew the best assistance needed to excel in the championship and we believe the girls’ outstanding performance in the just concluded African Games in Congo is enough to send a strong signal to other teams that D’Tigress are not in Cameroun for a tea party,’’ he said.

The AfroBasket Championship is scheduled to hold from yesterday to October 3.
