Birrel Avenue Senior School lifts GTBank Lagos Principals Cup

True to their pre-match boast, Birrel Avenue Senior Secondary School, Sabo, yesterday emerged champions of this year’s GTBank Lagos Principals Cup football competition, beating former champions, Keke High School, Ijaye, in a thrilling final played at Teslim Balogun Stadium.

True to their pre-match boast, Birrel Avenue Senior Secondary School, Sabo, yesterday emerged champions of this year’s GTBank Lagos Principals Cup football competition, beating former champions, Keke High School, Ijaye, in a thrilling final played at Teslim Balogun Stadium.

The match, watched by a large pool of spectators, including students from different parts of the state, was decided on a penalty shootout after both teams had played 1-1 at regulation time.

The Sabo Warriors (Birrel Avenue Senior Secondary School) eventually carried the day 5-3 in the penalty shootout.

Earlier, Ikotun Senior Girls College defeated Oriwu Senior Model College, Ikorodu 3-1 to win the female category.

The captain of Ikotun Senior College, Salisu Anu, who emerged the MVP at the end of the game, declared that she wants to be the Lionel Messi of female football, not only in Nigeria, but in the African continent in the nearest future.

The winning male and female teams smiled home with N1 million each, while the 1st, 2nd, 3rd runners up also received N750, 000, N500, 000 and N250, 000 respectively.

Managing Director of GTBank, Segun Agbaje, said yesterday that the purpose of the competition was not to produce a professional player, but praised the participating teams, saying that the institution was satisfied with their standard of play.

“It has been a wonderful season this year. Every year we try to build on the success of the previous year,” he said.
