The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Youth and Sports Development, Olusade Adesola has charged athletes and officials billed to represent Nigeria at the forthcoming Youth Olympic Games in Argentina to play free and clean of doping.

Addressing the athletes and coaches, who have been training in an Abuja camp in preparation for the Youth Olympic Games, which holds from October 6 to 18, Adesola said the success at the games would be more meaningful if it was achieved fairly.

The Permanent Secretary, represented by the Director of Planning, Monitoring and Information in the ministry, Mrs. Hauwa Kulu-Akinyemi, added: “The way to glory in sport is through hard work and dedicated training.

Doping is not a justifiable means and must never be an option to winning.”

He said it was more rewarding and more honourable to compete and win without depending on performance enhancing substance, noting, “it is important to stress that coaches must take their anti-doping responsibilities to athletes seriously and that the sanctions in accordance with the World Anti-Doping Code are equally severe on coaches who are found wanting in the anti-doping responsibilities.”

He said the government has resolved to bring to bare the full weight of these sanctions on any athlete and accompanying officials found wanting.
