Temilolu Adegoke and BUsola Olatunji have emerged the boys and girls champions respectively of the First Senator Akinlabi Olasunkanmi U-19 Squash Cjampionship held at the Lagos Country Club, Ikeja.

The competition, which Senator Olasunkanmi said was his contribution to the development of squash in Nigeria, was part of the activities marking the lawmaker’s 60th birthday.

A total of 24 players, including 16 boys and eight girls, competed in the tournament with Adegoke beating Desmond Igoudala 3-0 (11-9, 13-11, 11-9) to win the boys’ N20,000 prize money, while Olatunji cruised past Idowu Ogunyemi 3-0 (11-5, 11-3, 11-4) to win the N15,000 for the girls’ category.

Speaking after his triumph, Adegoke, said the final was a difficult one as Igoudala had been a consistent force in the tournament. He also applauded the opportunity given to young squash players in the state to hone their skills in the game.

In his remarks, Chairman of the Squash Section of the Lagos Country Club, host of the tournament, Funmi Bamkole, described the gesture by the senator as one that should be applauded and emulated by other well-meaning Nigerians.

“The senator has promised that this would be a continuous tournament and by next year, he also promised to make it an open tournament where youths from every part of the country can participate,” Bamkole said.
