The Senate on Wednesday approved a resolution, presented by Senator Aminu Iya Abbas, urging the Nigerian government to maintain electricity subsidies in the country.

The Senate said it decided to approve the motion of Senator Abbas after putting into consideration the ongoing challenges faced by Nigerians.

It added that after taking a cursory look at the astronomical increase in the prices of food and commodities, it had no choice but to endorse the motion during plenary.

“The decision was reached following a thorough review and endorsement of a motion presented during the plenary session by Senator Aminu Iya Abbas (PDP), who represents the Adamawa Central Zone,” a statement read.

The proposal also highlighted the importance of maintaining the electricity subsidy for the near future.

Abbas further urged the Senate to consider the ongoing difficulties experienced by the citizens of Nigeria.

There had been reports that the Nigerian government was contemplating on removing the electricity subsidy.

That is after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had, in his inaugural speech on May 29, 2023, removed the payment of subsidy on fuel, saying it was no longer in existence.
