The Lagos State Government has assured of its resolve to prioritise the inculcation of indigenous cultural education, especially among school age children, adding that the preservation of the various aspect of the indigenous culture, moral ethos and languages of the people of the State, is an utmost importance for sustainability of long term development and cultural values.

Speaking during a recent interactive session with school children participating in the ongoing summer cultural fiesta at the premises of the State Council for Arts and Culture, Ikeja, the Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Arts and Culture, Hon Adebimpe Akinsola informed that, “Governor Akinwunmi Ambode is an avowed lover of indigenous culture and its values and this can be affirmed through his unflinching supports for any programme or activity with indigenous culture content such as the children summer cultural fiesta”

Hon. Akinsola noted that children participating in the yearly programme, usually organised during the long holiday, are been exposed and train in cultural etiquette, the use of indigenous language to convey messages through moonlight stories, proverbs and idioms.

“They also undergo basic training in script writing, composition of traditional songs, dancing and drama presentation,” she said.

The Special Adviser, who put the students through series of idioms and short stories, enjoined the participants to make good use of the opportunity and the derived benefits to justify the State Government investment in the programme.

The two weeks culture orientation programme, which is running for the third year, according to the Director, Lagos State Council for Arts and Culture, Mrs Olaitan Otulana, also involves vocational training in beads making, arts and craft production and decoration. The session, which ended on August 18, saw participating children learn basic visual art and production of Adire tie & die.
