In lieu of the recent threat to aviation security, the Nigerian Police Force (NPF) has sought to partner airlines to boost safety of lives and properties around the busy Lagos airport.

Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG), Danjuma Ibrahim, who was recently deployed to head the Lagos Airport Police Command, said his primary responsibility was to improve on the existing security network, a task he wants to fulfill with the support of the stakeholders.

It will be recalled that the Federal Government recently alerted the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) and the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) over the threat by the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) to attack commercial flights into and out of the country and “bring bloodshed to the skies”.

The document, which emanated from the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation with the reference number: H.150/S.91/56, dated May 25, 2018, stated that available report revealed that Al-Abd al-Faqir Media, a pro-ISIS media outlet, issued the threat.

Ibrahim, who took over the Command in the wake of the alert, said the airlines have a lot of roles to play in security, especially by information sharing. Ibrahim has since visited Arik Air and Dana Air managements.

The management of Arik Air assured Ibrahim of their cooperation in a bid to further boost security at the nation’s airports.

The airline reckoned that information sharing was necessary in order to curb criminal acts in the sector, stressing that without the collaboration of all security agencies, it would be difficult for the government to achieve security of lives and equipment in the industry.

The Senior Vice President Operations, Arik Air, Captain Adetokunbo Adekunbi, said the airline had always taken security as a top-notch since itsestablishment and pledged to continue with the tradition.

He assured the AIG that the airline would continue to cooperate with the airport command and would not hesitate to share security information when the need arises.
