Just like when the Ebola virus epidemic broke in 2014, the recent outbreak of Monkey Pox in a sleepy community of Bayelsa State has created fear, anxiety among, especially as it has been revealed that the disease has got no cure yet.

This is despite repeated assurances by government at all levels that proactive measures were being in put to checkmate the spread of the disease, while efforts are being made to find its cure.

Mostly affected by this apprehension are residents of the Niger Delta region, where the first case occurred. While it has been observed that government at different levels are making efforts to curb its spread, there is every urgent need for sensitisation and efforts to be intensified to find a quick solution to the scourge.

It is not enough for government to say that it was still looking for a cure almost a week after its outbreak and spread to several states of the country.

Although, most state governments, especially in the Southsouth and southeast have opened dedicated phone lines for easy information and contact on the disease, not all the people residing in rural areas have access to the phone lines.

To that extent, efforts should be made to create more awareness, especially among the rural dwellers, who are susceptible to contacting the disease.
