Philanthropist ignites hope in barbers, urges them not to despair
Committed to the empowerment and growth of small-scale businesses such as barbing, businessman and philanthropist, Chief Victor Mbadiwe, Chairman, J.Green Mbadiwe & Sons, has urged barbers not to despair in their profession, rather be proud of what they do because it is an important skill.
Mbadiwe made the charge at the 25th edition of the yearly Barbers Competition organised by Lagos State Barbers, Hairdressers and Cosmetologists Association (LABHCA) and supported by J.Green Mbadiwe & Sons, sole distributors of WAHL clippers in Nigeria and West Africa.
Speaking at the event that had barbers, hairdressers, make-up artists and cosmetologists from all part of Lagos State assembled at the Hi-Tech open field in Orisunmbare area of Idimu, Lagos, Mbadiwe charged members of the Association to be proud of their profession because their job is very important
He said, “I want you to be proud of your profession because your work is very important. Anyone who wants to look good comes to you irrespective of their profession, be it the president or a senator, they all need the services of a barber.”
“The head is the most important part of the body and before you can appreciate the beauty and style of a person, you start from the head. So, never look down on yourself,” he added.
Mbadiwe encouraged the barbers to creative in their job of hair beautification, saying only good values mixed with requisite skills could turnaround the fate of any business.
“This competition is what you should be proud of; this is an art. The Wahl product is what you can be proud of to ease your skills. We are always here for you,” he stated.
With the aim of assessing the professionalism, creativity, poise, finishing and handling of tool, emphasis was more on the required level of hygiene that must be upheld in the business of hair-cut.
The selected contenders for this year’s grand finale were each given a space to set up a mini barber’s shop with the necessary equipment and tools needed to aid their quest in the barbering contest that held in the tent that provided shade for both the participants and the guests.
Each barber was mandated to present two hairstyles — classic look (front and back also known as beejay) and avant-garde, a creative design with name WAHL Clipper on the model’s head.
Known for its premium quality and durability, the brand in its 35 years of existence in the Nigerian market have supported the barbers association in ensuring that they are celebrated as well as rendering financial support to ease their ways of doing business.
Mbadiwe decried the influx of fake and substandard clippers in the Nigerian market, stressing that this has disrupted sales and increased complaints from users of the WAHL brand, who have fallen victims to the fraudulent act.
He, however, said that efforts constantly made to ensure that the perpetrators face the music with the help of law enforcement agencies. “It’s been a fight; we keep doing our best to curb the situation. It’s not been easy but we have to protect our market.
“We look out where the perpetrators have their warehouses and we call on law enforcement agencies to ensure that they are brought to book. It’s been a fight I must say.”
Winner and runners-up were rewarded with cash prizes, WAHL clippers and other consolation prizes. Also there was 40 percent price discount offer for all WAHL clippers sold at the event.
