Lagos to re- certify PSP compactors

The Lagos State Government says it is prepared to apply tough measures on owners of waste compactors, which usually cause delay at dump sites.The authorities say such waste vehicles will be made to go through re-certification process before they can be allowed to use any of the dump sites in the State.

Commissioner for the Environment, Mr. Babatunde Durosinmi-Etti made this known during his unscheduled visit on Soulus dumpsite.He said the situation in which compactors that were not in perfect condition broke down incessantly at dump site, causing unnecessary delays and loss of man-hour was not acceptable as such inefficiency was capable of bringing hardship to Lagosians and jeopardisng the effort of the State Government to achieve a cleaner and sustainable environment.

He urged all Waste Collection Operators to ensure that their compactors were in good order, stressing that owners of dysfunctional compactors would no longer be allowed to dump refuse at dump sites across Lagos State until they put their vehicles in order and obtain government recertification to avoid delays at the dump site facilities.

The Commissioner said that the same measures would apply to waste compactors that brake down and left indiscriminately on the road, adding that compactors left indiscriminately on the road, road medians or street corners would be treated as abandoned vehicles and handed over to the Lagos State Abandoned Vehicles Committee to take charge if owners do not heed the call for their repairs or removal on time.

He urged all Waste Collection Operators to ascertain the condition of their compactors and effect repairs where necessary and as well ensure removal of unserviceable ones from the points of there abandonment within two weeks to avoid stringent measures from the Government.

He emphasized that it was in the good interest of the State that more waste compactors were functional to enhance the ease of movement in and out of dump site and thereby improve the turn-around time of compactors to boost the achievement of a cleaner, healthier and sustainable environment.
