One of Nigeria’s leading integrated facility management companies, Eliezer Workplace Management Limited, has called on the government to give the facility management industry the needed support so that it can contribute effectively to national development.

Managing Director of the firm, Benedict Olugboyega Alabi, who made the call recently at a press briefing in Lagos, listed the challenges facing the industry and how it can help revive most of the country’s decaying infrastructure.

Alabi said: “First and foremost, good facility management helps to preserve some of the country’s biggest assets: buildings, plant and equipment. We make sure that they are properly maintained to deliver the services required.

“Secondly, good facility management helps staff to work in a healthy environment that also aids better productivity. Thirdly, a good facility manager will ensure that the chemicals being used to clean a workplace are not harmful and hazardous to the occupants and property.”

Alabi added: “Also, for organisations that engage the services of many contractors, they have the burden of managing many invoices, many people to relate with, for instance, security company will have a security supervisor to supervise his team likewise janitorial company will need a supervisor. Also, an electrical company needs an electrical supervisor but if you give everything to a facility manager, only one person will be supervising all these activities for you because they are all working under the same umbrella.”

“Lastly, good facility management also helps clients to focus on their core competencies, which on its own, creates specialisation for them and allows them to be more productive.”

Alabi, while noting that the facility management association in Nigeria has been working assiduously on getting the industry to be a chartered institute, however, added that it is as well working to get the needed recognition from the public sector so that we can contribute to the national development in its areas of business.

Alabi is one of the few Africans that are certified as sustainability facility professionals (SFP).
Eliezer Workplace Management Limited is also one of the few facility management companies in the Nigeria that is OHSAS 1800:2007 (Occupational Health and safety) certified because of its health and safety culture; and also ISO 9001:2008 certified for Quality Management System (QMS).
