Ekiti State APC has said it will participate in the local government election slated for December, 2017.

Ekiti State APC has said it will participate in the local government election slated for December, 2017.

A statement by the Publicity Secretary, Taiwo Olatunbosun after the State Executive meeting today resolved to participate in the proposed Local Govt election

“We call all members of our party particularly those interested in the chairmanship or councilorship position in local governments and wards to indicate their interest.

” We advise the Ekiti State Independent Electoral Commission (EKSIEC) to be fair and transparent in dealing with all registered political parties who will be participating in the election.

“PDP-led govt has failed Ekiti People and therefore our party will not sit back while the people suffer,” Olatunbosun said.

The APC had initially approached an Ekiti State High Court to challenge the composition of the membership of the EKSIEC, alleging that they are composed of mostly card-carrying members of the ruling PDP, but lost the case.

The tenure of local governments in Ekiti State is two years.

Meanwhile, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr Olusegun Osinkolu, has appealed to the leadership of the party to listen to the electorate in deciding the choice of its candidate to win the 2018 governorship election.

Osinkolu said the party may still lose the election even with credible and transparent primary, if the candidate that emerges is only popular within the party but lack mass appeal among the electorate.

The APC chieftain spoke in Ado Ekiti, on Monday, said the party must look for a candidate who musters enough popularity within the party and among Ekiti populace to be able to win the election.

He charged the members of the State Working Committee (SWC) to eschew partisan interest and make rapprochement with critical stakeholders, including civil servants, artisans, students, market men and women to be able to know who is more acceptable among over 30 aspirants vying for the plum seat in APC.

He said it would be counterproductive for the party to underestimate the political capacity of the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the deputy governor of the state, Prof. Kolapo Olusola.

Osinkolu added: “Winning election goes beyond the capacity of a party. It is possible for an aspirant to be popular within a party without acceptability among the electorate. That is why it is imperative for APC to reach out to critical members of the public to be able to make the right decision.”
