Akwa Ibom State PDP prepares for council poll

As preparations reached an advanced stage for the Akwa Ibom State council elections scheduled for November 11, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has released the timetable and guidelines for the conduct of its primaries.

This is to enable the party to elect delegates that would determine the chairmen and councilors elects from the 31 council areas of the state for the exercise.The PDP timetable ma have been triggered by the release of election schedule by the Akwa Ibom State Independent Electoral Commission (AKISIEC)

Speaking at the state party secretariat, Uyo on yesterday, the state Chairman of PDP, Obong Paul Ekpo said that sales of nomination form would begin on September 8th at the party’s secretariat.

He also disclosed that screening of aspirant is scheduled to commence on the 9th and end on the 10th of September.According to him, “All Appeal cases would be heard on the 11th September 2017, while the councillorship primaries has been slated for the September 12. The elections of Ad-hoc delegates for party congresses and primaries for chairmanship candidates will take place on September 14.”

While he said the inauguration of sensitization and mobilization committees across the state has commenced, Ekpo pledged that the party’s preparation should also include the need to encourage members to be law abiding during the exercise.

According to him, “Qualified members of the party who have been favoured by the internal zoning arrangement of their areas must abide by the guidelines for nomination.

The nomination guidelines indicates that to be eligible, any aspirant contesting for the chairmanship and councillorship primaries must, apart from being a Nigerian citizen by birth, be a card carrying and financial member of the PDP and also a registered voter.”

The guidelines also says an aspirant for the position of a chairman shall be a person of not less than 30 years of age and must possess a minimum qualification of School Certificate or its equivalent with at least five credits including English language obtained at not more than two sittings.
