Will Buhari get incorruptible ministers?
SIR: On Friday, July 31, 2015, 9a.m., while waiting to see Prof. Bade Ajayi, University of Ilorin, my consultant on Ifa Orunmila divination, I was listening to a debate on Royal FM, Ilorin, on current affairs. Will President Muhammadu Buhari ever get the holy persons he is seeking to choose as ministers? Someone said it would be difficult in Nigeria. Another person said human beings are not perfect, and that Buhari also has his own level of corruption.
Buhari may not steal money but corruption connotes misappropriation of public funds, which was what he did at the end of the 2015 Ramadan. Is going on pilgrimage among Nigeria’s priorities? The former President Olusegun Obasanjo (OBJ), spent untold amounts of money on West African games competitions, national conference, etc. and left Nigeria with epileptic electricity and bad roads. Ditto Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan; he wasted billions on his superfluous national conference and changing the face of our N100 note. Buhari has also committed Boko Haram, because Nigeria’s constitution stipulates her as a secular state. Don’t be surprised that at the end of the day, his supporters will be fanatical Muslims and settled Christo-Islamic clerics. Those who want to help Nigeria retrieve stolen funds should, therefore, ask the president: What will you do with it? And if those people truly love humanity, they should help us monitor him, in view of misplaced priorities.
Nigeria’s problem has never been lack of resources, but bad leadership. If the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo could use income from the sale of cocoa and kola nuts to give free primary school education and free health care to the entire Yorubaland, and maintained high level of infrastructure contextually speaking, the OBJs, Shagaris, and GEJs should be ashamed of themselves. Sadly, Buhari is towing wrong footsteps.
